Another Life

Last night I took a break from Art of Action Madness and went to my local life drawing group.

The Pawlet drawing group is something that Tom and I started about ten years ago. We meet at the library and - with shades heavily drawn - draw from the model every Wednesday night from October through April. It is a lot of work to run the group (among other things we have to assemble and disassemble the model stand every week) and with Tom now teaching twice a week at the Art Students League in New York, we finally decided to give it up. To our surprise and delight, other members of the group stepped in; the group continues and is better than ever. Plus I get to waltz in at 7, waltz out at 9, and enjoy the title of Drawing Group Leader Emeritus.

I wish there was a life drawing group near St. Johnsbury/Danville. Just like what you described- some evening, once a week, 2 hours long... I miss that so much. Working from the figure is the best way to learn how to draw, I think. I can tell you have worked from the figure a lot!

Are you sure there isn't one? I have a couple of friends who live in St.Johnsbury that you might ask: Bill Darling and Kim Darling, if you know them; if you don't I'd be happy to give you their contact info.

And then there is always the start-it-yourself route which is well worth the effort: drawing from life really is essential to learning the figure.

I know Bill and Kim pretty well. They were doing something at their house, but it was really for Academy students... not sure if they still do it, or if they'd let me join in. I'll give them a call though, its been awhile.

Plus, don't you enjoy having to say "change!" all the time?

Sorry, I meant NOT having to say "change"....

Lovely drawing Elizabeth.

Is Tom taking over Frank's class?
I hear Frank is not well.

Curtis, you know Bill and Kim? Small world! Say hi to them for me.

Lali, It is odd not to be calling the poses - I'd gotten so used to it! Of course, in the tradition of the Art Students League I always said "change please" ;)

Jeff, Frank resigned from the league about a month ago. He is ill, but stable and still painting. Tom had been substituting for him since the second week of school and Ira (current director of the League)has assured him that the class is now his however the board has yet to make it official so we are only 99% sure about it. Translation: please don't spread it around as yet. I sent an e-mail to Karen and some of our old Mason class chums with the news - I thought you were on that list, but I guess I slipped up.

BTW Frank has also given up the landscape class which Tom will be teaching in Pawlet next June - a prospect that has me frantically scouring the vicinity for places for students to stay and wondering how I am going to cook for 40 people at the parties...

My hard drive died a few months ago and along with it went your e-mail address.

Anyway I hope this space is alright to talk about this. Tom is the best man for the job if you ask me. Of all the students I can think of off the top of my head, he's the right choice and so different from Frank in personality. It's great that the studio 7 is going to keep going in the DuMond, Mason linage.

Driving down to New York twice a week is a drag though.

You guys live in a pretty small town. Rutland is largest town near you I think. Interesting challange.

Cooking for 40! I would make a marinara sauce in advance and freeze it. Use it as a base sauce and you can add things, like sausage, to make a different sauce every week. If you make the sauce over a few months it wont seem like such a chore.

Then all you have to do is make the salad, you can get creative with salads. Have a lot of bread. Catering is all about thinking ahead and planning.

Drawing Group Leader Emeritus is rather a significant and serious title))) I am fond of your creativity anyway, disregarding the title you ere given!
